Why Art Matters: David Hockney and the Value of Creative Investment

At the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, the latest exhibition of David Hockney reminds us why art is not only a cultural experience — but also a meaningful investment.

Hockney: A Modern Master and Market Phenomenon

David Hockney, now in his 80s, is one of the most celebrated living artists in the world. Known for his sunlit Californian pools, vibrant landscapes, and digital innovations, Hockney continues to inspire audiences across generations.

But beyond museums and headlines, Hockney also holds the title of the world’s most expensive living artist at auction: his painting Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) sold for over $90 million in 2018.

This extraordinary figure isn’t just about fame — it reflects the growing recognition of contemporary art as a long-term asset.

The Exhibition: A Journey Through Time and Technique

Titled David Hockney: 25, the current exhibition at Fondation Louis Vuitton is the most comprehensive retrospective of the artist’s career to date, spanning seven decades of work from 1955 to 2025. Open from April 9 to August 31, 2025, the show includes more than 400 works — from paintings and drawings to digital art and video installations.

Curated by Sir Norman Rosenthal, former head of exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Arts, the exhibition was conceived and arranged in collaboration with Hockney himself and his long-time studio manager and partner, Jean-Pierre Gonçalves de Lima. Notably, the exhibition opens with Hockney’s most recent works, offering visitors a reverse chronological perspective on his ever-evolving practice.

This carefully curated journey invites the public to experience the depth, range, and continuity of Hockney’s vision. By pairing earlier works with his latest digital creations, the show underscores how the artist’s fundamental concerns — color, perspective, memory, and place — remain vibrant throughout his career.

A Year in Normandy: Art in Lockdown

At the heart of the exhibition lies A Year in Normandy, the series Hockney created during the pandemic while isolated in the French countryside. Using his iPad, he captured the shifting seasons with luminous clarity and meditative simplicity — a modern visual diary that blends intimacy and resilience.

Critical Acclaim

The exhibition has received wide critical acclaim. Caroline Roux of The Art Newspaper calls it “a triumphant celebration of his inexhaustible gaze,” while The Guardian describes it as “a deeply moving tribute to the power of art.” The sheer scale and emotional resonance of the show reaffirm Hockney’s place not just in art history, but in contemporary cultural consciousness.

Why Collect Now?

For collectors, Hockney is a benchmark — a reminder that today’s innovations can become tomorrow’s classics. His work shows how personal vision, bold experimentation, and timeless subjects resonate across time.

At Art Most, we believe in discovering and supporting artists at earlier stages of that journey. While a Hockney may be out of reach, many artists working today are creating pieces with powerful voice, visual strength, and lasting value — both aesthetic and financial.

Art Is a Statement. And a Strategy

Collecting art is more than decoration — it’s about connection, curation, and vision. It’s about recognizing potential — in an artist, in an image, in a story.

David Hockney’s career proves that investing in art is not only rewarding — it can be transformative.
