Sylviane Thomas (born in 1956, Marnia, Algerie).
“12 years ago, I enrolled in an art group, run by a qualified teacher. I could only attend occasionally as my time was divided between France, England and families commitments but it was good to learn the basics. after a while, i got frustrated by the rigid teaching, so i felt a lot happier to learn on my own. My favourite media is oil.
I have extended my work to other topics and enrolled on a course on portrait with Mike Skidmore. He gave me the best compliments and encouragements I could hope for.
I have done a fair amount of seascape, as I do love the sea, above and below. My husband being a marine biologist has given me that love for it. In addition to this, living in Lyon, my parents could not afford to go to the seaside, so for me seeing the sea was simply magic. I have become more and more fascinated by it.
It certainly cheered me up to work on the seascapes during the Covid confinement.
however, i also love the country side and animals, i have created a fair amount of commission work that I have given away. i enjoy challenges with all sort of topics. I like diversity and i think art is like life, it should not be boring.
What define my art work is vibrant colours, it reflect my personality but I realize it is not everyone’s cup of tea…
I also love working with pastels, i find it relaxing and the creativity i produce is quite pleasing . One of them made the front cover of a local news magazine.
For a long time, I did not want to sell my work, as I felt I was selling my babies. I also would not accept money for commissioned work, as I was pleased that people liked my work. I have come to terms with this now, as I feel that I would like recognition for my art work.”
